Water damage is one of the most common — and costly — issues homeowners face, especially after renovations or during heavy rain seasons. The sooner you catch it, the easier (and cheaper) it is to fix. Left untreated, water damage can lead to mould, structural issues, and expensive repairs.
At Velliss Building, we've seen firsthand how early detection can save a home from serious long-term damage. Here's how to spot the warning signs before they become bigger problems.
1. Stains or Discolouration on Walls and Ceilings
One of the most obvious signs of water damage is a brown, yellow, or dark patch on your plasterboard or paint. These usually appear around corners of ceilings, under windows, and near bathroom walls or ceilings below wet areas.
What to do: Check for new stains or changes in size over time. If it's growing, there's likely an active leak behind it.
2. Musty Smells
That damp, musty smell in a room is often the first sign of hidden water damage — even if you can't see it yet. It could mean water is sitting behind walls, under floors, or trapped in insulation.
What to do: Trust your nose. If one room smells mouldy or damp, get it checked before mould becomes a bigger issue.
3. Peeling Paint or Bubbling Walls
When moisture gets behind your paint or plaster, it can cause bubbling, cracking, or peeling. In bathrooms or laundries, this often points to failed waterproofing or a slow leak behind the wall.
What to do: Look closely around windows, skirting boards, and tiled walls — especially after heavy rain or long showers.
4. Warped or Buckled Flooring
Timber, laminate, and even tiles can begin to lift or warp when moisture builds up underneath. You might also notice spongy or uneven patches as you walk.
What to do: Pay attention to any changes in your flooring, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, or balconies.
5. Visible Mould Growth
Mould loves damp, dark places — and it often means there's moisture getting in somewhere it shouldn't. Small spots of black or green mould around ceilings, window frames, or corners should never be ignored.
What to do: Clean small patches quickly, but don't just cover it up — investigate the source of the moisture.
6. Increased Humidity or Condensation
If your windows are constantly fogged up or a room feels humid, it could be a sign that moisture is building up somewhere. This often happens when ventilation is poor or when a slow leak is present.
What to do: Ensure the space is well ventilated, and keep an eye on recurring condensation or dampness.
